In Smile at the End of the Ladder, Henry Miller notes that a clown is "a poet in action." He goes on to say:
Joy is like a river : it flows ceaselessly. It seems to me that this is the message which the clown is trying to convey to us, that we should participate through the ceaseless flow and movement, that we should not stop to reflect, compare, analyze, possess, but flow on and through, endlessly, like music. This is the gift of surrender, and the clown makes it symbolically. It is for us to make it real.
I have these words pinned to my wall where I see them daily. I am the daughter of a clown. I love circus -- it's in my blood -- and my bones know how important humor is to the health of our society. A society that frowns and worries constantly is at war with itself.
This morning dawned foggy and grey, but when I walked out on the street, turned the corner and saw these delightful young clowns walking my way, my spirits soared. These members of the Prescott Circus clown troupe are making it real. They will perform today and tomorrow at Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts, 1428 Alice St, first at 11am and then again at 1:30 pm. If you can check, them out!
They believe that through the teaching of the precise skills -- both physical and intellectual -- necessary for effective acrobatics and clowning, these young people grow ever more confident and compassionate. Traditionally, circus supports diverse and highly creative communities, and Prescott Circus encourages its young students to develop habits of cooperation, creativity, and kindness -- habits that will serve them well as they complete their academic studies and become leaders in their own communities.
